What to expect during your Lifestyle Session...

Pregnancy is an emotional and completely euphoric time!  I have two girls and I can clearly remember how exciting moments were for us. Sometimes uncharted territory can be a little scary and with a newborn session coming up, you may be feeling confused about what you need to do to get ready.

Your Home

I absolutely love sessions at home! There is no place where you are more comfortable and that always shines through in the images. The majority of the shoot will take place in the nursery. Depending on the light in your home, we can use the den or master bedroom areas, too. We can also take some photos outdoors if the weather permits (ideal for spring and summer due dates!)

The one thing I cannot stress enough is ~ do not worry about if you house being a mess—you will have just had a baby! All you need to do to prepare is open the blinds/curtains to let in as much light as possible and clear off your nightstands and tables of clutter. That's it!

Be on the lookout for an email from me with tips and tricks on how to prepare for your session! It should arrive about a month away from your due date and will answer any questions you have!

What do I wear?

Looking super relaxed and at your best will make you feel more comfortable during the session.  This is an exciting time in your life and we want to capture all of that…so take care of yourself first!  As far as clothing goes, keep it simple. Throw in a little color if you’d like, but skip the busy patterns.  I suggest cotton knit camis and knit tops.  I’m also a big fan of skin-on-skin portraits with you holding your baby against you. They’re so beautiful and timeless.  If you want some portraits like this with your newborn, consider a strapless top or tank top as an alternative.  For your husband, the same rules apply.  Solid or subtle patterned tops work best.  Try to stay away from prominent logos or writing on clothing. Siblings can wear a light colored shirt or simple plain dress, or for boys they can go shirtless while holding the baby for a beautiful photo. Being comfortable is key!

Do we use props?

During your lifestyle session, my goal to capture the relationship between the new baby and his/her parents and siblings.  This doesn’t mean that I won’t take individual photographs of the baby and capture some great detail shots of his/her little toes and fingers.  I am happy to incorporate any ideas you might have!  As for props, I have a solid white muslin swaddling blanket that I love to use as well as some sweet little flowered headbands for little baby girls.  If you want to use these, just ask!  Feel free to incorporate any special family quilts, heirlooms or baby blankets that you would like to use in the photos.

Please know that there is no rush with a newborn session. I like to give special attention to each client, especially newborn sessions. Most lifestyle sessions last about 1.5 hours, but they can go as long as 2.  I do not mind waiting for you to feed or change baby, or taking a break to soothe your baby.  We are in no rush!

The Most Important Thing...

There will be so many emotions during the shoot—love, excitement, wonder, amazement.  It can be tough, but try to relax!  Moms tend to stress out because this is a new experience and because they want things to be “perfect.”  I will take your baby’s lead and allow him/her to be the focus of the shoot.

Just focus on relaxing and cuddling with your sweet new addition and I will create images that you will cherish forever!
